The revolution starts here!

America Wins Again….

Today when I got home I learned of the news of Qaddafi’s death. He was shot in a battle in his hometown of Sirte, murdered even though he had already been captured. Now, I talked about Libya before on this blog, and I am not going to again, rehash the truth about Libya under Qaddafi. What I am going to do is talk about the disgusting jubilation from both liberals and conservatives in the US, and how it corresponds to a bigger, longer lasting narrative that most Americans are, I think, unaware of.

Since 1945, the US government has attempted to overthrow over 50 governments worldwide. In spite of this, the US likes to make beautiful overtures about how the US proudly stands behind democracy. How the US is always for the underdog, justice, and freedom. We have spun ourselves so tight into this myth, that any American who questions the realities of history or current events is labeled anti-American (the worst insult in a country that so values mindless flag waving nationalism) and told that s/he is a traitor etc. Ad naseum. We are so devoid of critical thinking, so disconnected from the rest of the world. So seemingly ignorant of our own collective cognitive dissonance.

We Americans like to pretend we are the noble knights in shining armor. We come to the rescue of the oppressesd, or so we think. What have we accomplished since WW2 in terms of the actions we took against other countries and their governments?

1. Korea: Fighting to force Korea to have the government we wanted it to have after WW2 the US invaded Korea. After 3 years of fighting with troops from many nations, almost a mini world war, the death tolls were catastrophic. 2.2 million dead, and many many more wounded. What did we accomplish? Nothing really. Today the war is still not officially over and Korea is still bitterly divided. N.Korea is still being punished for not having the government the west approves of, and so gets pushed further and further into a corner of global isolation. Great job.

We fought against many countries, from China, to Albania, You know what? Fuck it. Here’s a list of countries the US has tried to overthrow:

(*=successful overthrow)

China 1949, 1950s
Albania 1949-53
East Germany 1950s
Iran 1953  *
Guatemala 1954  *
Costa Rica mid-1950s
Syria 1956-7
Egypt 1957
Indonesia 1957-8
British Guiana 1953-64  *
Iraq 1963  *
North Vietnam 1945-73
Cambodia 1955-70  *
Laos 1958-60  *
Ecuador 1960-63  *
Congo 1960  *
France 1965
Brazil 1962-64  *
Dominican Republic 1963  *
Cuba 1959 to present
Bolivia 1964  *
Indonesia 1965  *
Ghana 1966  *
Chile 1964-73  *
Greece 1967  *
Costa Rica 1970-71
Bolivia 1971  *
Australia 1973-75  *
Angola 1975, 1980s
Zaire 1975
Portugal 1974-76  *

Afghanistan 2001-

Iraq 2003-

And this isn’t even a full list!! Who are really the agressors in the world? What other  nation has attacked more than US? What does it take for us to admit that for the last century plus, our government, us, we have been the bad guys? How many times does NATO have to bomb civilians? How many democratically elected and supported leaders can we overthrow to make our rich country richer? How many US military members have to die for a fucking lie before we finally stop this madness?

The news corporations loved posting the bloody photos of Qadaffi today. They say it’s a victory for democracy (not if the rebels have a say in it of course). They say it’s good that he’s gone, because, after all, the people of the middle east and North Africa are what’s really important to the US government.

In other news, the US government is selling arms to a truly autocratic regime in Bahrain, who have been busy trying to suppress actual peaceful protests in that country. The US has a Navy base there and considers it’s government to be a key ally. Can we please at least stop pretending we are acting on some kind of principle? If we’re going to be evil, fuck it, just admit it. Admit to the American people how long they have been lied to. Maybe someone will come to the American people’s aid when they start filling the streets enraged. What poetic justice that would be.

  1. Reminds me of reading William Blum’s ROGUE STATE and about Smedley Butler, among other things. International US interference, intervention, and imperialism at the behest of the corporations has a deep history. Almost like someone said that was the sole purpose for the formation of the modern nation state…hrmmm.

The only place I seem to break with you is on the matter of violent revolution: I see all social particulars as occurring within massive scale social systems of almost infinite complexity. All individuals are pawns in these systems, most unwitting and effectively innocent victims of the nonsense between their ears. Ideas, not people, are the enemies of freedom and equality, and it is up the the enlightened fortunate enough to see behind the veils (e.g. fetishism of commodities) to struggle against the ignorance and illusion for the benefit of all. I understand as a scientific observer of society that violence begets violence, and agree with Gandhi that poverty is violence that can result in like retribution, but like him, and for the reasons given, I can never support violence or praise the violent.

    in solidarity,
